Huron County Public Health (HCPH) has announced it will be holding a Tire Take Back Day on Saturday, June 22nd, 2019 at the Huron County Fairgrounds parking lot from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. During this event, HCPH will be collecting car and light truck tires from community members to be recycled; no agricultural, industrial, or commercial tires will be accepted. This event will only be open to Huron County residents; no businesses, institutions, or out of county resident tires will be permitted. HCPH encourages all Huron County residents to take advantage of this free opportunity to clear their properties of old, discarded tires.
This event is being offered in an attempt to help eliminate mosquito breeding grounds in the county. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), just one tire can become the breeding ground for thousands of mosquitoes. Discarded tires fill with water and, due to the tire’s design, it is difficult for water to evaporate. The small amount of standing water collected can turn into the perfect spot for mosquito larvae to grow. Cleaning up tires from properties will help control mosquitoes by eliminating their breeding grounds.
Again, HCPH will only be accepting car and light truck tires from Huron County residents. No agricultural, industrial, commercial tires will be accepted. Any Huron County resident interested in participating in this event must pre-register at http://bit.ly/tiretakeback2019 (case sensitive).
