Nursing/Medical Division - What We Do

Nursing philosophy Public Health Nursing, at its root, is education, advocation, and promotion of health in, for and with the community. The Nursing Department of the Huron County General Health District seeks to assist the communities and families of Huron County with a non-judgmental and sensitive attitude. We serve all residents of Huron County, regardless of race, creed, socio-economic or citizenship status, language or age in our offices but more importantly, in the community.

A Public Health Nurse is:

  • A Registered Nurse (RN) employed by the health district
  • Skilled in Working with children and families
  • An expert on what is available in our community to help families

Huron County’s Public Health Nurses include:

  • Two Master’s prepared Registered Nurses
  • Three Bachelor’s prepared Registered Nurses
  • Three Associate’s prepared Registered Nurses
  • Two Diploma graduated Registered Nurses

The Public Health Nurses provide generalized public health nursing services in all of Huron County and the City of Bellevue. These services include communicable disease investigation and follow up, home visiting, including newborn visits, Bureau for Children with Medical Handicaps services and bereavement visits. The PHN’s are also in most schools of Huron County, conducting vision, hearing and scoliosis screenings and providing education to children and staff.

Public Health Nurses in Huron County, with Medical Division Clerks also staff the Family Health Services primary medical care clinic, the Title X Family Planning and Women’s Health and STD clinics. PHN’s also provide nursing services such as immunizations to children, teens and adults. They perform mass vaccinations during the annual drive through flu shot clinics. Huron County’s Public Health Nurses also perform other injections as ordered by a physician, blood lead screenings, Senior Center blood pressure checks, educational programs and head lice checks.
