Environmental Programs - Household Sewage Treatment Systems

The Huron County General Health District is the regulatory authority in charge of residential septic systems up to and including triplexes. Please review the Regulations of the Board of Health of the Huron County General Health District, Chapter 29, Sewage Treatment System Rules.

Thinking of Building a House in the country?

The Huron County General Health District only reviews the site, soil, and treatment system design information. This information must be presented for review and approved before a permit to install a sewage system can be issued. There are private companies and certified soil scientists that provide the services needed in order for you to present the necessary information for our review. Lists of soil scientists and system designers and a Site Review Application are provided in our Site Review Packet.

Please note that prior to splitting any parcel of land, no matter the size, the Health District strongly recommends contacting the Huron County Soil & Water Conservation District at 419-668-4113 ext. 3 or the Huron County Tax Map Office at 419-668-2021 regarding Regional Planning requirements. The Regional Planning requirements must be met in order for you to record the land parcel and receive a mailing address for the property.

Evaluation of Existing System (Sale of Property/Refinance)

If you have an existing home and septic system and need to have the system evaluated for the sale or refinancing of the home, our department can do a Realty Inspection. A realty inspection can include an assessment of the sewage system and/or a water sample. Please note all instructions on the Realty Inspection Request form and fill it out as completely as possible.

If you are purchasing a home, contact our office or the Huron County Auditor regarding Special Assessment liens or pending Special Assessment liens.

Annual Assessments

Effective January 1, 1998, the Huron County Board of Health reinforced the Sewage System Assessment Program. Homeowners of systems having chemical or electro-mechanical components for treatment are encouraged to obtain a performance evaluator or service provider who is certified and registered to maintain &/or assess these components. Fees for an annual assessment or a maintenance contract can range considerably. Typically, your evaluator/provider will forward a copy of the assessment/maintenance report to our office for your convenience. If our office does not receive a copy of an assessment or maintenance report, two reminders will be mailed to the homeowner. Failure to choose your own evaluator/provider would result in the health district performing its own assessment of your system. The health district’s fee is $250.00. Unpaid assessments are placed as a lien against the property.

If you are purchasing a home, contact our office or the Huron County Auditor regarding Special Assessment liens or pending Special Assessment liens.
