About Us - What is Public Health?

Public Health is the science of protecting and improving the health of communities. Public Health addresses the health of the community as a whole rather than the health of an individual. Public Health leaders work continuously to prevent disease and to improve the health of our residents and visitors!

Huron County Health Department began in the 1880s. The first staff included a part time Health Commissioner who visited in schools and homes, Sanitarians who inspected restaurants and dairy farms, plus Vital Record Clerks who kept birth and death records. Today the department consists of approximately 25 employees working in four divisions.

The Health Commissioner leads the department and is entrusted with the responsibility of addressing the public health concerns of Huron County. This is accomplished through the various divisions and programs of the Health Department. Our mission, and the mission of all health departments throughout the United States, is to promote a healthy life and lifestyle.

The Administration Personnel frequently work behind the scenes in support of numerous public health initiatives. The Administrative Division is responsible for the day to day business, fiscal, management, Medicaid and insurance eligibility determinations and personnel functions of the Health Department.
